A switchboard or fuse board is what controls and isolates all electrical circuits in your home or business.
There are many reasons why it may need updating or replacing. For example, new electrics within kitchens, bathrooms or even just a few new sockets will require the circuit to be protected by a RCD and therefore it may be best to replace the existing fuse box.
Old switchboards with rewireable fuses have a significantly higher risk of electrical fire, and provide a much lower degree of protection against people suffering an electric shock.
New switchboards use Circuit Breakers and Residual Current Devices (RCDs or ELCBs) to ensure that in the event of a fault, the faulty circuit is isolated extremely quickly, often in as little as 30 milliseconds or less.
The latest switchboards combine Miniature Circuit Breakers (MCBs) with RCDs into a single unit called an RCBO. RCBOs provide the protection qualities of both an RCD and an MCB, and have the advantage of being only the same small size of traditional circuit breakers. This all adds up to a smaller, neater and safer switchboard.
The benefits of upgrading your switchboard:
* Easy restoration of power when circuit is tripped due to overload
* Protection against electrocution with RCDs or RCBOs
* Reduced risk of electrical fire due to overheating of cables
